Any Given Thursday

One of the many perks of living in the city that doesn't sleep, is Chelsea on a Thursday evening. If you have ever gotten off at 23 street and seventh ave and notices a gaggle eclectic dressed plebeians heading west, you most likely witnessed the migration to the Chelsea Gallery openings. These receptions are a great chance to see up-and-coming artist, schmooze with the art locals and maybe even get a free drink. To get a complete calender of who and where check out Chelsea Art Galleries at http://chelseaartgalleries.com/.

This Thursday was no different. I made my way to 25 and tenth avenue amid art house kids and growing humidity. I first popped into Stux Gallery, to catch the 'Low Blow: And Other Species of Confusion.' exhibit. This labyrinth of an exhibit showcase many mediums of all things that were eccentric and sexual. Through the swarms of patrons I beeline for a free Yuengling. Once refreshing beverage was taken care of I meandered around the twisting hallways. I found a giant painting of a girl's thighs and panties to be most alluring. A few Aaron Johnson's paintings littered the exhibit, whom I first saw on Fecal Face, and felt a small joy that I actually recognized an artist. I met up with friends and we decided a less crowded venue was in order.

As we ambled down the street, we came upon a truly amazing exhibit at Lennon, Weinberg,Inc. Inside Cindy Workman's subtle, yet intriguing prints lined the white walls. Her work draws a comparison between girls and women by interfacing different images of the female. The prints manage to mix sexuality and innocence in warm tones. Workman herself was outside the venue greeting friends and indulging our many compliments. This gallery opening marked her first show in New York, but hopefully not her last.

All in all it seemed to be a successful evening of art viewing and drink drinking. I look forward to next thursday when a slew of new artists will materialized in the white hallways of Chelsea.
